Elisa J. Coates

Elisa joined ELM in 2024 and works in the criminal litigation practice area. Elisa’s work focuses on critically analyzing accusations of wrongdoing, and deeply understanding the individual who has been accused. Her background in public defense has taught her that context is key. Whether charged with shoplifting, assaulting a family member, or any other crime, Elisa is a ready listener, eager to learn her client’s background and fight for a just outcome based on the evidence and circumstances.

Before joining ELM, Elisa worked as a criminal defense lawyer in Ontario (Canada), primarily on public defense cases ranging from shoplifting and domestic violence to drug trafficking and murder. She gained extensive experience in understanding the reasons a person comes into contact with law enforcement and the criminal justice system, and using critical thinking and compassion to determine the best defense. Prior to law school, she worked as the Director of an inner-city youth center addressing the needs of Indigenous youth.

During law school, Elisa focused on courses about constitutional protections and participated in a year-long criminal law clinic in her third year, honing trial skills through the full management of real cases involving DUI, assault, trespassing, and theft. She also participated in a semester abroad at Hebrew University learning about international law, and spent a summer interning with Legal Aid Ontario working on access to justice for recently charged individuals who are navigating the criminal justice system.
